Tasmania - The Holiday Isle

Tasmania is an island state some 200km over The Bass Strait from mainland Australia.

There is a choice of either flying or sailing to the island; The Spirit of Tasmania departs from Melbourne and, introduced in 2004, Sydney.

Tasmania the 'Apple Isle', possesses magnificent lakes, mountains, beaches, rivers, waterfalls and so much more. Compared to the rest of Australia, Tasmania's diminutive size is one of its attractions since it is possible to see much of the island in a few days.

If you sail on the Spirit of Tasmania into Devonport near the north coast, it will take around three and a half hours to drive to Hobart on the south of the island.

Hobart, Tasmania - Australia

Hobart's most famous resident of recent times is Mary Donaldson, now the Crown Princess of Denmark when she married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. Princess Mary actually hails from Taroona which is a small suburb some six miles from Hobart. Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, the second oldest and most southerly city in Australia.
Hobart is located on the south east of the island of Tasmania, on the banks of the River Derwent and is dominated by Mount Wellington which looms above the city.
Like many other Australian capitals Hobart is built on a natural port, which in this case is formed as the Derwent expands and exits to the Tasman Sea. Hobart is a popular tourist destination with a good selection of accommodation and with the introduction of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry route from Sydney, Tasmania is now more accessible than ever.

Devonport, Harbour City, Tasmania - Australia

Launceston is 120 miles north of Hobart and is situated in (almost English style) rolling countryside at the tip of the Tamar River. This lush city, located at the junction of three rivers including The Tamar, which connects to Bass Straight, has a charming heritage character born out of its well preserved buildings and extensive parks and gardens. Launceston is located on the northern side of the island of Tasmania.
Devonport is Tasmania’s third largest city situated as it is in the centre of the north coast, at the mouth of the Mersey River. During your time in Devonport, perhaps visit the Tasmanian Maritime and Port Museum, or the Don River Railway and Museum, containing a large collection of vintage steam locomotives.

Port Arthur Ruins, Port Arthur, Tasmania - Australia

Port Arthur is located on the wild and beautiful Tasman Peninsula, which is to the south east of the island of Tasmania, 100Km (60 miles) from Hobart. As the Tasmanian Peninsula is almost an island itself it was an obvious location for a maximum security penal settlement. The link to the Tasmanian 'mainland', via Forestier Peninsula, is a narrow 100m isthmus named Eagle Hawk Neck. In the 1800's ferocious guard dogs were chained here just in case any escaped convicts made it this far north. Tasman Peninsula map.
Port Arthur is located on a beautiful natural harbour, which the road caresses on the journey south. This can be explored on a cruise or even by seaplane which operates here.

Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park, itself a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The area is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. A visit will reveal why.
