Northern Territory - The Outback Un-leashed
The Northern Territory is renowned for its colourful characters. The type you'd meet at one of our legendary outback pubs, cattle stations or country towns. Uncomplicated, larger than life, and only too willing to share a yarn or two. It's hard not to fall in love with our down to earth attitude.
If you are looking for an outback adventure holiday you cannot go past the Northern Territory. With wide open roads, self driving in a car, 4WD or camper van (motor home) is easy.
It is around 1800 kms from top to bottom of the Northern Territory and if you take 7 to 10 days, you will have plenty of time to explore some of the sights along the way.
Closely linked with Darwin and Kakadu is Katherine Gorge or Nitmiluk National Park to the Traditional Owners. It is 400 kms south of Darwin and the town of Katherine .
With Katherine Gorge, Cutta Cutta Caves, Mataranka and the aboriginal cultural experience at Manyalalluk all easy distances it makes Katherine a great spot to spend a few days. There is excellent fishing in the rivers in the Top End but you must be wary of the salt water crocodiles, or estuarine crocodiles as they are often called. These crocodiles can grow in excess of five meters and weigh around a tonne so they have the potential to be dangerous. The fishing is good for barramundi in the rivers and estuaries.

Darwin
In Australia's tropical Top End, the delicate pink beauty of the waterlily and the prehistoric brute strength of the crocodile merge in stunning Kakadu National Park. Rivers with roaring waterfalls and a landscape of towering sandstone escarpments cradle some of Kakadu's treasures waiting to be explored.
The region has a dramatic history, with a strong Aboriginal cultural heritage, a 19th century gold rush on its doorstep and a series of air-raids during World War II. Darwin survived 64 Japanese bombing raids, only to be devastated by a tropical cyclone in 1974. |

Alice Springs
Alice Springs lies almost in the geographical centre of the immense Australian landmass, some 1500 kilometres from the nearest major city (almost equidistant between Adelaide and Darwin)
Alice Springs to Adelaide: 1316 km
Alice Springs to Darwin: 1305 km
Alice Springs to Sydney: 2030 km
In typical Australian humour it has been said of Alice Springs “that every breeze is a sea breeze”.
The town sits astride the Stuart Highway, a ribbon of bitumen road which dissects the nation for 3000 kilometres from south to north, the name of which commemorates the remarkable courage and resilience of the first European to successfully traverse Australia, John MacDouall Stuart. |

Kakadu National Park
World heritage listed Kakadu National Park is the gateway to Arnhemland. Kakadu National Park covers almost 20,000 square kms, is an Australian icon and is only 250 kms east of Darwin the capital city of the Northern Territory.
It is an easy three-hour drive on the Arnhem Highway. It is renown for its diverse environment from towering escarpment containing aboriginal rock art to the floodplains of the South Alligator River with its amazing array of birds and wildlife. Depending on the season you may see crocodiles, wallabies, dingos, goannas and many of the myriad of bird species that inhabit the national park.
The flora is also magnificent and changes dramatically from the tropical summer season to the dry season in May to November. You can stop at the Bark Hutt Inn, stand next to the towering cathedral termite mounds that abound along the road. There are a lot of Kakadu Tours from Darwin in the NT that depart daily.
They range from a day to a week and can be Kakadu accommodated or camping tours. Travel can be anything from a private chartered limousine or private luxury 4WD, through large touring coaches to small coaches and 4WD buses or troop carriers. You can drive yourself in a self-drive car or camper. There is a Kakadu tour to suit every budget and need. |

Uluru & Kata Tjuta
Uluru (Ayers Rock), in the centre of Australia, is the world's biggest monolith at 3.6 kilometres long, two kilometres wide, 348 metres high and 9.4 kilometres round. Uluru, which belongs to the Anangu Aboriginal people, changes colour in different lights, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
Kata Tjuta, the rock domes located west of Uluru, form part of the traditional belief system of one of the oldest human societies in the world. The traditional owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta are the Anangu Aboriginal people. |
